Dan's Custom System
Dan is excellent customer. We’ve done his boat as well as a few of his cars. When Dan comes in for a system, he wants it done right not necessarily fast. He always buys the best, especially in this case. He uses this car as a commuter so he wanted a functional, hi fidelity system that sounded beautiful and could crank when his favorite song comes on. When he brought the car in, he left all of his work effects in the trunk to show me what he was looking for in a sub box. He wanted a subwoofer but didn’t want to take up the entire trunk with a box so we decided to incorporate the sub box into a usable part of the trunk for his work effects. He wanted room for a couple of storage containers and some other things.
I started with our best head unit: the Alpine CDA-9886. With the head unit we added a KCE-400BT bluetooth unit from Alpine. The nice thing about this head unit is it offers superb sound quality without requiring a rocket scientist to learn how to run it.
The speakers in this case were the nicest we could find: they were made by Hertz, model Hi Energy series # HSK 163. These speakers were incredible! The manufacturer said they were made specifically to replace the speakers in this car and they were definitely right! In the pictures you can see a speaker under the seats. The car originally came with a 3-way setup already so we had to do something to replace it. The speaker under the seat acts as a mid-woofer or mid-bass driver for the music. The main vocals come out of the replaced 3” speaker in the door and the tweeter. When we took the factory speaker out of the floor, we were a little worried because that speaker was bigger than the aftermarket one we were replacing it with. We forged ahead and the Hertz company rep re-assured us that we would be impressed. We had to make a spacer for the new speaker, which we carpeted and re-installed back into the factory enclosure under the seats. The end result was awesome! It looked factory and all went well.
All rear speakers were coaxial Alpine Type “S” series. The rear doors were 4” (SPS-400) and the rear deck lid speakers were the 5 ¼ “ (SPS-500). They blended beautifully with the front speakers and the sound was absolutely amazing.
To keep the installation fairly simple, we went with an Alpine amplifier: model PDX 5. This was an excellent decision because we only needed to install one amplifier to run the entire system… and it ran the entire system very well! We decided to make something custom to go around the amplifier instead of just mounting it under a seat and hiding everything. Since the amp wasn’t very large, we were able to fit the crossovers from the front speakers on either side of it. We also made sure he was able to fold down and up his back seats when needed. Overall I think the box turned out really nice.
This next set shows the making of the box. One thing we try to strive for here is to make things blend and mesh well without having to use fiberglass. Fiberglass can get expensive and can be very time consuming. From previous pictures you can see we are very capable, but not everybody can spend the money to do it. Without using fiberglass this box turned out phenomenal… and functional. We put a grill on the woofer for protection because of the things he puts in the trunk for work. I don’t think that he would have benefited at all from any kind of fiberglass work. The customer was extremely happy and so were we.
The last addition was the Custom shelf he wanted for his Sport Coat. This was the coolest thing about this Custom trunk setup. He didn’t want to hang his coat in the car, but he wanted an “out-of-the-way” place to put it. When he originally came in, he had a makeshift type shelf that he put it on, but it easily slid off or wouldn’t hold up. We decided that we would make him a new shelf with sides and a front on it that was part of the box. That way when he put is coat back there it wouldn’t fall to the floor or slip off or get dirty! We covered the shelf with matching material to the trunk so the coat wasn’t on a slippery surface. Overall the trunk turned out awesome and Dan was very happy and impressed with everything.
